Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to questions that come up while using Jupiter. For questions about buying Jupiter, the free trial, privacy, or other devices, see Support.
Finding my way
Section titled “Finding my way”I can’t find today. Press Cmd+T (Canvas ▸ Jump to Today). The canvas glides back to today’s column. See The Canvas.
How do I find something I put on the map months ago? Use Edit ▸ Find (Cmd+F), type a word from its title, and press Return. See Search.
Search can’t find something I know is there. Search covers titles, comments on plain Actions, Notes on the canvas, and Milestone labels. It doesn’t yet search comments on Action Clusters or Linked Actions, Notes on Vision Boards, or Special Day names.
Placing things
Section titled “Placing things”Why won’t Jupiter let me put an item there? Actions, Action Clusters, Linked Actions, and Notes each need clear space; they can’t overlap other items or run past the edge of their container. Move what’s in the way, or make the container bigger, and try again. (Decorations are the exception: they can sit on top of anything.)
I asked Repeat… for 8 copies and got fewer. A Repeat series stops at the first copy that would hit something or run past its container. You get every copy that fits. See Repeating Items.
Why can’t I create a Goal from the Item menu? The Item menu’s New commands create inside whatever container is selected. Click a Dimension’s header first, then choose Item ▸ New Goal. With nothing selected, only New Dimension is available.
Undo and recovery
Section titled “Undo and recovery”I deleted something by mistake. Press Cmd+Z. Deletes can be undone, including whole Dimensions, Goals, and Projects.
I restored a snapshot and want my map back. Undo doesn’t reverse a restore. Instead, open the Snapshots panel and restore the snapshot named “Before restore,” which Jupiter saved just before. See Snapshots.
I cleared the sample plan and want it back. Open Settings ▸ Data and choose Restore Sample Content…. It replaces everything on your map with the sample plan, and it also deletes every saved snapshot. If you’ve started building your own map, export a snapshot of it to a file first (Export to File in the snapshot’s menu). See Settings.
How do I clear everything and start with an empty canvas? Settings ▸ Data ▸ Start Fresh…. Jupiter saves a “Before Start Fresh” snapshot first, so if you change your mind, restore it from the Snapshots panel.
Your data
Section titled “Your data”Where is my plan stored? On your Mac, and only there. Jupiter has no account and doesn’t send your plan anywhere.
How do I back up my plan? Back up your Mac with Time Machine (or another backup tool); it includes Jupiter’s data. For a version you especially want to keep, save a snapshot and use Export to File from its menu. See Your Data.
What happens to my plan if my trial ends? Nothing. It stays on your Mac, and you can still view it and export it. Unlock Jupiter in Settings ▸ Purchase to edit it again. See Your Data.
Settings and shortcuts
Section titled “Settings and shortcuts”Can I change the keyboard shortcuts? Yes. In Settings ▸ General, hover over a command, click the pencil, and press the keys you want. See Keyboard Shortcuts.
Is there a shortcut for setting a status? Yes: with an Action selected, Cmd+1 sets Pending, Cmd+2 In Progress, Cmd+3 Completed, Cmd+4 Cancelled, and Cmd+5 Information.
Jupiter doesn’t switch to dark mode with my Mac. That’s by design: the theme is always your choice. For a dark canvas, choose Callisto in Settings ▸ Appearance. See Themes and Appearance.
